Many people in the West are better acquainted with the graceful, flowing movements of Taiji forms as the more static Qigong forms. However, both share a common philosophical background, and may contribute to the development and maintenance of health and well-being. In essence, the forms which are regarded as completed Taijiquan (literally, the "supreme ultimate fist" or "art supreme ultimate boxing") may be conceptualized as a dynamic form of Qigong or "energy crop" and a way to regulate the system and prevent disease.

At its roots, Taijiquan is a powerful and effective martial art, but behind the martial applications are the same Taoist principles: the development of harmony between the Prefect of Yin and Yang energies of the body, promoting the smooth and flow of Qi throughout the body, and maintaining maximum health.
