Chinese herbal medicines are used internally and externally. For both types of herbs can be prepared by extraction of water or alcohol, cooking, baking, frying or grinding.

Internal forms are prepared as powders, teas (decoctions AKA), extracts and pills. The powders are usually just the projects (by stirring the powder into the water and the mixture) or large gummy pills (6-9g) obtained by mixing in honey. The teas are boiled for 10 minutes to an hour. The extracts are put into the water or alcohol or oil. The pills are made from both traditional and modern processes.

Other types of liniments, powders, extracts, pastes or ointments, and plasters. Often herbs are crushed and mixed with a binder, such as sesame oil, paste or ointment andthen used in this form. Plasters were made by applying the paste of leaves or other material to use against the skin. Modern plasters prepared commercially are usually attached to hold it in place. Other formulas are used for bruises, sprains, open wounds, burns and blisters and other skin conditions.
