TCM Approach Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors composed of smooth uterine muscle and connective tissue. The uterus is the site of the most common tumors of the muscle to occur. Conventional Western medicine believes that estrogen may cause fibroids and fibroids grow faster. Estrogen triggers the myometrium (the smooth muscle layer of the uterus) to grow and thicken, which is the location of the fibroids. Depending on the location, fibroids are classified as "intramural fibroids (located in the innermost layer of the uterus), fibroids subserous (protruding into the abdominal cavity), submucous fibroids (l invasion of the endometrium) and "parasitic fibroids (those who have migrated outside the uterus).
Statistics indicate that uterine fibroids develop more frequently in women who are in their 30s and 40s. Approximately 30% of all women develop fibroids by the time they reach 35. If the fibroids are removed surgically, there is a 10% chance they will grow back. This could be why the hysterectomy is widely favored by doctors to treat uterine fibroids. Indeed, fibroids are the most common cause for hysterectomy in the United States. Approximately 30% of all hysterectomies performed in this country are for fibroids. Some complications of hysterectomy include bleeding, ovarian possible, loss of function of the bladder, urinary incontinence, depression, and infections. Some studies estimate that nearly 70% of all hysterectomies performed in this country are either unnecessary or can be avoided by using other approaches. Traditional Chinese medicine for the therapy of uterine fibroid tumors, using acupuncture and medicine plants, is the oldest known form of medicine that is still in use today.
Patterns of Uterine Fibroids in Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine which includes the category of uterine fibroid tumors are "Zheng Xia. Xia Zheng is defined as" the masses in the uterus with a feeling of pain, swelling, or fullness, bleeding and in severe cases . The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine of the disease recorded in the third century BC. All TCM gynecology books address this situation in detail as he was treated by different medical schools over the last two thousand years. Three modes of uterine fibroids are differentiated by traditional Chinese medicine. Each pattern is differentiated in terms of specific qualities of menstruation, abdominal pain sensations, changes in breast tissue, the aspect of language, and the qualities of the pulse. The leading herbal formulas and herbal used to treat each model are listed.
Chi Stagnation and Blood Stasis.
Emotional stress or physical trauma are the most common causes of Chi stagnation. Stasis of blood may be caused by bleeding abnormally heavy menstruation, blood loss during and after childbirth, or "bad" sex life (excessive sexual activity, or having sex during menstruation ). Symptoms include: regular cycles with heavy bleeding, or little, but long duration of bleeding, breast distention, abdominal swelling or pain, feeling drawn into the anus, a language with darker red points of the body and a thin wet, deep, nervous, or thin choppy pulse. Fibroids are tumors have found that the masses who are either fixed (not moving), or mobile on palpation. Susan is part of that trend. Cnidium (Chuan Qiong), angelica (Dang Gui), red peony root (Chi Shao), and Corydalis (Yan Hu Suo) are important for this model of herbs and BlockagEASE (Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang) is the main formula used to address the combined model.
Yin Deficiency and Empty-Blazing Fire.
Lack of energy in the kidney or chronic illness is the cause of this tendency. This is an advanced stage of Yin Deficiency. Symptoms include: the early periods of heavy or thin, long duration of bleeding, a sensation of heat in the chest or abdomen, a sensation of itching in the chest or a sensation of distension or severe chest pain The blood-white or yellow- white vaginal discharge after a period of one language red, dry or with a yellow coating and a rough or thin thin rapid pulse. Anemarrhena (Zhi Mu) and Phellodendron (Huang Bai) are the main plants used to meet this trend. Water Fire Balance (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) is widely used formula based plants in China.
Chi Stagnation of the liver and spleen Deficiency.
Spleen deficiency of energy is behind the trend. Symptoms include: regular or late periods of heavy bleeding, a sensation of pulling the lower abdomen, intestines in bulk, thin vaginal discharge after periods of a language or pale white thin coating language and a thin wet or thin nervous pulse. The fibroid tumor is a soft mass. Buplerum (Chai Hu), and peony (Bai Shao) are widely used herbs, liver and spleen Harmonizer (Xiao Yao San) is a key formula to address this pattern.
