Methods: Patients were selected according to the diagnostic standard of WHO, Who had treated by dietotherapy but blood sugar still detained at the level over than 7.77 mmol/L, hadn’t ever received insulin treatment, and non-pregnant. 80 cases enrolled were divided randomly into two groups.
Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Yiqi Zishen Huayu Decoction (YZHD, decoction for supplementing Qi, nourishing Kidney and resolving blood stasis) in treating diabetes mellitus.
The 50 cases in the treatment group were 32 males and l8 females; aged 32-7l years, 44 years in average. They were treated with WZHD. The basic prescription of it consists of Radix Pseudostellaria heterophylla l8g, Radix Astraglus 24g, Radix Pueraria l8g, Radix Trichosanthes l5g, Cortex Lycii Radicis l8g, Fructus Cornus 18g, Semen Cuscutae l5g, Radix Salvia Miltiorrhizae 30g, Flos Carthamus l2g, Rhizoma Dioscorea 30g. The prescription may be modified based on the type of Syndrome differentiation, added Gypsum Fibrosum 30g, Rhizoma Anemarrhena l2g for Yin-deficiency with Lung-dryness type; added Radix Rehmannia l5g, Rhizoma Polygonatum 24g for both deficiency of Qi and Yin type; and Radix Moromdae Officinalis 9g, Herba Epimedium l8g for both deficiency of Yin and Yang type. It was given one dose daily by boiled water and in taken orally. The dose form would be transferred to powder or pills for maintain the effect when urinary glucose had turn to negative or blood sugar had lowed to normal range.
The diet of patients was adjusted with fixed volume of staple food depending on the degree of labor and constitution. Other hypoglycemic agents were forbidden in the observation period. The control group was treated only by diet controlling. Clinical symptoms, signs, Urinary glucose of patients were observed and 24 hours quantitative test of urinary glucose, saccharified hemoglobin and serum insulin were treated before and after the treatment.
Result: Referring to the efficacy evaluation Standard in "Guidance on Principle of Clinical Research" promulgated by National Ministry of Health, therapeutic effect on the patient whose symptoms disappeared and fasting blood sugar reduced to normal range is taken as markedly effective; on those symptoms disappeared basically or alleviated obviously, fasting blood sugar lowered to below 8.33 mmol/L, urinary glucose lowed to (+) or (++) is taken as improved; on those Who is not arrived the above-mentioned norms is taken as ineffective. In the treatment group, the effect was assayed as markedly effective in 32 cases, 64%; as improved in l4.28% and as ineffective in 4.8%, the total effective rate 92%. In the control group, 4 (l3.3%) was markedly effective, 6 (20%) improved, 20 (66.7%) ineffective, and the total effective rate being 33.3%. The comparison between the two groups showed significant difference (P<0.0l). The fasting blood sugar 24 hours urinary glucose and sascharified hemoglobin in both groups were reduced and serum insulin increased, but as compared with the results in the control group, these criteria in the treatment group were improved more favourable, P<0.0l.
Conclusion: YZHD has satisfactory therapeutic effect in treating diabetes mellitus.
