Diarrhea Due to Dampness and heat

Main symptoms and signs: Urgent diarrhea, thin or watery stool with mucus and fetid odour, anal burning sensation, fever with dysphoria, abdominal pain with poor appetite, thirst with preference to drinking, dark and scanty urine, red tongue with yellowish and greasy fur, slippery and rapid pulse.

Therapeutic methods: Clearing away heat from the intestine, removing dampness and regulating the middle energizer.

Prescription and drugs: The prescription used is the modified Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Decoction composed of 10 g of Gegen (Radix Puerariae), 10 g of Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 3 g of Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), 5 g of Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), 10 g of Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis) (to be wrapped) and 10 g of Chaocangzhu (parched Rhizoma Atractylodis).

Modification  For the patients with more heat than dampness, 10 g of Huashi (Talcum), 10 g of Hanshuishi (Calcitum) and 8 g of Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) are added; for the patients with more dampness than heat, 10 g of Yiyiren (Semen Coicis), 10 g of Fuling (Poria) and 10 g of Biandou (Semen Dolichoris) are included; for the patients with abdominal distension and pain, 8 g of Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), 3 g of Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and 12 g of Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) are added; for the patients with vomiting, 6 g of Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam) and 6 g of Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) are included.

 Diarrhea due to improper diet

Main symptoms and signs: Epigastric and abdominal distension and pain with the desire for detecaUon, relieved by diarrhea, thin stool with sour and fetid odour, or with undigested food, eructation with sour and spoiled odour or vomiting, poor appetite and sleep, red tongue with thick and greasy fur, slippery and rapid pulse.

Therapeutic methods: Promoting digestion to remove food retention and strengthening the spleen to stop diarrhea.

Prescription and drugs: The prescription used is the modified Baohe Pill (Lenitive Pill) composed of 10 g of Jiaoshanzha (carbonized Fructus Crataegi), 10 g of Shenqu (Massa Fermentata Medicinalis), 6 g of Laifuzi (Semen Raphani), 3 g of Chenpi ( Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 8 g of Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 8 g of Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), 10 g of Fuling (Poria) and 6 g of Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis).

Modification: For the patients with evident abdominal distension and pain, 5 g of Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and 8 g of Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) are added; for the patients with vomiting, 5 g of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and 5 g of Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam) are added.
