Paranasal sinus disease is very common disease
The sinus cavities are essentially empty space in your head. While the voids can not object more to do with our heads lighter and easier to move, the lining of the sinuses provide an absolutely vital function: they protect the body against dust, pollen, d other types of foreign bodies and germs in the air we breathe.
The sinuses are lined with mucous membrane, soft tissue, wet, covered with a layer of mucus. The fabric surface is densely covered with microscopic hairs, like eyelashes.
Sinus disease is very common in industrialized countries. It contributes significant respiratory disease, which is one of the biggest causes of loss of work in the United States. It causes a major disease, including congestion, headaches, post-nasal discharge and nasal polyps. Complications of sinus disease include face, eye, and brain abscess, nerve damage to cranial nerves (nerves of the face and head) near the sinuses, local destruction of bone, spinal fluid leaks, and sometimes even death.
Appropriate treatment of sinus infections is necessary to prevent complications and decrease morbidity. Your ENT is the best qualified physician or surgeon to diagnose and treat sinus problems. A preliminary consultation with an otolaryngologist will help to prevent irreversible changes in the lining of the sinuses and bones that occur when the infection has been present for a long period of time.
Sinus disease is manifested in several forms, but all are related to a combination of infection and the inability of the air into the sinus cavities of the nose. Similar to the ear and mastoid sinuses are air spaces surrounded by bone thin and lined by mucous membrane. When the air is absorbed by the mucous membrane faster than air can pass through the openings of the sinuses (Ostia) in the sinuses, a relative vacuum develops and fluid is drawn from the tissue lining the sinus cavities in the sinuses. This fluid becomes infected easily. Allergy causes mucous glands to release the liquid thicker (mucosa), which can also be infected and are difficult to clean the sinuses. Besides the toxic effect on nasal tissues of cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke, cigarette smoke paralyzes the hairs on the cilia of the nasal mucosa and sinuses that move the mucous membranes of the nose of your product normally your throat. When the normal mucosa did not sink your nose into the throat, it becomes infected more easily and adds a "downward spiral" of problems that causes a disease in its own right sinus.
Sinus disease is integrally linked to pathological processes and environmental factors that affect the head and neck. Anatomical problems that interfere with normal air flow and drainage of the sinuses good cause and aggravate sinus disease. Deviation of nasal septum and anatomical abnormalities from old facial fractures are only two such cases. Allergies, including dust mites, molds and animal nasal allergies cause swelling that interferes with the normal air circulation, clogs the sinus openings, and causes excessive mucus production which exacerbates the infection. GERD, gastro-intestinal tract, may also aggravate sinus disease. Sinus disease associated with the formation of nasal polyps is aggravated by the use of aspirin or products containing, including dyes tartrazine (yellow dye No. 5). Smoking also aggravates sinus disease.
Sinus surgery, the opening of the sinus cavities so air can reach the mucosa in a "functional" way, can reverse the disease process as the mucosa and bone of the sinuses was not too damaged by the infections. FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) has revolutionized sinus surgery. It has increased the completeness of the removal of the disease even as it allowed for simpler procedures and less invasive to eliminate sinus infections or disease. Endoscopes Short pass light in the nose and sinuses and to magnify the field for the surgeon, allowing the state of advanced instrumentation to open small sinus cavities and remove the disease with less surgical trauma to the remaining bones and mucous membranes. Less packaging is needed for this type of sinus surgery and there is less postoperative pain and drainage.
Control of allergic disease is imperative if the sinus disease is to be cured and if a new infection should be avoided. Injections against allergy (desensitization) for mites, mold, and cats are often indicated when the sinus disease is to be well controlled. Nasal steroid sprays help reduce swelling and open nasal sinus ostia, as well.
