Skin

The skin consists of two layers, the epidermis and dermis. The upper layers of the skin consists of dead cells containing keratin. It is a hard waxy substance that helps make the skin tough enough to protect the body. The cells that make keratin are called keratinocytes. It is these cells that can develop into squamous cell cancer. In the deeper layers of the epidermis are cells called melanocytes.

The skin is really another organ of the body. We do not normally think of it as an organ because it is not just in one place.

It is these cells that become cancerous in melanoma

The basal cells are at the bottom of the epidermis. These are the cells that all cells of normal skin above develop from. They are also the cells that basal skin cancer cells can grow from. Is the most common type of skin cancer.

skin cells and cancer

There are several types of skin cancer without melanoma. The most common types of cancer are squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma. These cell types are both in the epidermis, the top layer of skin.

Skin cancer can develop slowly and may take several years before cancer is noticed. But sometimes, a skin cancer can develop very quickly - within months.
